Wow! Did a search for "healthy" on Yelp and came across this place. Don't worry - it's not a funky, vegan, gluten-free hippie place; just not a greasy hamburger joint either.



Took the family here and we stared at the menu. My 14 year old daughter was asking questions about everything, and my 21 year old son was putting up his spoiled, non-thankful attitude. Both were not too eager to try "Greek food."



My wife got the Chicago, my son had the beef gyro, my daughter had the chicken and I had the original. Before that however, we started off with the meatballs for an appetizer. When we opened the box, there they were: 5 big, lumpy, dry-looking meatballs. Ugh. Then I tasted one. I need to know what seasonings they use because they were marvelous. And not dry at all. Don't be fooled by the looks.



Then we got back to the goods. The potatoes and salad were amazing. The dressing and lemon-type sauce on the potatoes could have been poured into a glass and I would have drank it. And then the best for last. The gyros were so ridiculously good that I did not want to take my last bite, because I didn't want it to be gone!



As for my son? He totally jumped 180 degrees and thought it was DELICIOUS! This place is a NEW favorite and we will DEFINITELY be going back!

Went last night to athena's with my family and we loved the gyros. We were convinced to try the cake by the awesome ladies serving the food and took a few pieces home to eat. Oh my goodness..if you haven't tried the lemon cake or the german chocolate cake you seriously missing out!

Very delicious! The Dolmades are perfectly prepared. The potatoes were a hit. The beef very tasty, seasoned perfectly. The bread was good. The desserts are also delicious. I highly recommend Athena's. Can't wait to try their Moussaka when it's on their menu.

One of the best places to eat in Bakersfield!! The food is outstanding. The meat in their gyros is the most tender and flavorful I've ever had!! Tonight we had the Chicago gyro and it was amazing. Besides the food, the owners are the most friendly people and he cooks all the food right in front of you. You must try this wonderful restaurant!!

One of the best places to eat at in town. SOOOO welcoming. I love this place. And the owners are absolutely lovely. Treated me like family from the moment I met them. And the food is amazing.

It was a really neat experience. I am not from Bakersfield and enjoy the healthy dishes Athena's Greek Cafe and Bakery when I drive north.

I will not forget my first visit when the owner shared his Greek heritage with me. I would suggest people at least try Athena's.

I love this restaurant, it feels like your in their family home as a guest! We ordered the lemon cake it is now in my top 2, watch out Granny!! I also took baklava home...AMAZING! I am definitely going back for dinner :) Thank you Athena's for the hospitality!

I have no shame. The baklava is so perfect, I started dinner with very sticky fingers! We just gave it our first try. Being veterans of the LA Greek festival, we were tempted to doubt a Bakersfield restaurant that calls itself Athena's.

The lemony potatoes they served my husband somehow ended up on my side of the table. I had the Greek Spaghetti when they told us they were all out of the beef dish Guy Fieri demonstrated; they served it with two kinds of pasta to assure an intro to the big tube-style noodles. The mizithra cheese is divine.

We will be back! For breakfast we will share the slice of lemon cake we couldn't possibly consume.

Great food friendly people what else could you ask for. We had a meat ball pita and Chicago gyro and coconut macaroon and the , forgive me if can't recall the name, oatmeal/chocolate flat "cookie" . Both were awesome.

First time at Athena's, had the chicken plate with a side of potatoes wow! it was superb loved every bite and for dessert I had their triple layer strawberry cake amazing my mouth was in heaven!! friendly atmosphere amazing service just love it!

Don't be fooled by the size of the building. The food is bursting with rich flavor, and the staff is very friendly. They will answer all your questions, including the proper way to say "Gyro."

5 stars. The food was delicious and instantly made me wiser. Zeus high fived me on my way out and invited me to hang out with him and everyone else on Dionysus' yacht. When I arrived to Lake Ming, a giant wooden ship emerged from the skies and remained hovering over the waters as we partied all night long into the wee hours of the morning. I somehow awoke in my bed later that day and thought it was just a dream, until I discovered Poseidon's trident leaning against my wall with a note saying "Use this for good."



Best gyro I ever had. Will return.

Today I was banned for leaving a less than stellar review on Yelp. I'll say it here just like Yelp, Google and every other outlet I can find. The food is good. The owner is rude.
