Kirari West Description

“Kirari West” is a family owned bake shop that originated in Japan. Yoshi Saito (The Father) and Yoichi Saito (The Older Brother) came up with the concept of creating delicious pastries with locally grown quality rice flour instead of wheat. In 2011, the Saito family opened the first store, “Kirari” in the City of Fukushima. Kirari became the first and only store in the region to carry exclusively non-wheat pastries.

Despite Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami that same year, Kirari stayed strong and continued to grow. Those in the food industry including farmers, wholesalers and restaurateurs faced serious issues due to the public’s avoidance of buying products from Fukushima. However, the nuclear plant that was in crisis after the quake and tsunami although, while also in Fukushima, was on the other side of the prefecture (state) from the Kirari stores and surrounding farms. Kirari has made a tremendous effort to exhaustively test the contamination levels of both their ingredients as well as the final products to make sure that the food is safe. Kirari feels strongly about working to fight against the negative assumptions some have has that all food from Fukushima is contaminated and inedible. This is just not true.

Meanwhile, Hiroyasu Saito (The Younger Brother) with such an independent spirit had long since moved away in 1996 to the US. However, in 2014, having found a new appreciation for connectedness and family, Hiro decided to join the family business. He collaborated with them to open the first store in the US aptly named “Kirari West. ”. Hiro wishes to give hope and courage for people in Fukushima to come back from the earthquake and struggles from the after mess by being a pioneer for a small company from Fukushima to pursue a dream overseas.

it is so difficult to find places that are safe to eat for the gluten intolerant, and most of those places are just bakeries. Solid service and great tasting food.

Typically I don't even bother with gluten free bakeries because it's always disappointing. This is one of the best gluten free shops I've found, and I've been to many, so don't even hesitate to go here. I drove from West L.A., it was 100 percent worth it, and we took a bunch of pastries to go, after having some delicious breakfast sandwiches. Super friendly service, and the customers kept on coming.

This place was heaven for me. Having Celiac has made eating a meal out hard.

This place gave me peace of mind to just eat and enjoy the flavor of the food. It was amazing! I will be back soon. We drove from West Covina to enjoy our breakfast.

I don't want to get sick eating out and I have gotten sick at places that claim to offer gluten free.

This place is SAFE for all who need gluten free pastries, sandwiches, desserts!

This place is just amazing. The staff is more than friendly, they make you feel like you're part of the South Bay family. Delicious sandwiches and glorious coffee and other drinks. It's a must!

This place has gluten free options and a very cool sand-timer (not to keep) which comes with your tea pot. Staff is cool.

The staff was knowledgeable & very welcoming. We ordered the avocado toast, overnight French toast with blueberries, chai tea late, genmaicha tea, & triple grilled cheese. The avocado toast was good, but nothing special in my mind, but the grilled cheese & French toast were spectacular! We also took some desserts to go: blueberry cheese cake & Chocolate mousse. Both were delicious as well!

So proud to boast about a lovely gem in my own neighborhood! Kirari West Bake Shop is on PCH near Herondo. The cafe itself is charming, the staff is friendly, and the pastries are AMAZING! I did not go there for the gluten free pastries and baked goods, but they were a pleasant surprise. My friend and I enjoyed lemonade, Sencha green tea, and three pastries: the chocolate brownie, fruit tart and Matcha tart. The tea was made authentically, Japanese style, and was perfectly brewed. All three pastries were moist and delicious. Both tarts had delicious crusts with the right blend of crumble and crunch. My favorite was the Matcha tart made with Matcha green tea and raisins, but I enjoyed all three pastries. We sat outside, but they also have great indoor seating. Will definitely return and highly recommend.

Now here's a gem for the beach cities. A Japanese bakery that uses rice flour in all of its pastries, with some fantastic coffee to boot. The baked fruit tart I tried was a treat in every sense of the word, and their matcha dacquoise is a must have. Absolutely worth the price, definitely bringing friends!

My fiance amd I traveled to Los Angeles, and he had celiac disease. It was so nice to eat at a dedicated gluten free restuarant and have no worries. The food was amazing!

It was delicious. The custard puff cake and the strawberry white chocolate shortcake are to die for and the lemon muffin was so moist and tender. The only drawback is the 60 mile round trip from home, but I will be making it over and over again!

I finally tried this place after living in the neighborhood for 3 years. Delicious! The best part is everything is gluten free so there's no risk of cross contamination. Whether you are gluten-free or not, this place deserves your business!

Delicious sandwiches and pastries. Hiro and his staff are super friendly and it's great to see their menu changing often with new items. I think they have officially mastered wheat / gluten free baking.
