About Washington Street Diner

It's more than a meal; it's a ministry! See our story for details.

Washington Street Diner Description

The Washington Street Diner has been part of Athens’ downtown commerce for many years, but ownership and operation has more recently been transferred to Friendship Church. Friendship’s mission for the Diner is to provide the community with a place to enjoy a cooked-to-order Southern breakfast and great fellowship with neighbors, while providing food service training to the short term employees. Some of the Diner’s employees are short term because once they have completed their training, they find permanent employment in the food service industry using their newfound skills. Then another person steps in to begin the training process, and the cycle continues. One of the goals of the church is to help people in the community overcome generational poverty through education and job training, implementing that old adage that states: “Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime. ”
The Diner also houses all the food donations for The Full Tummy Project (friendshipumc.org/fulltummy), a ministry of Friendship Church that addresses childhood hunger on a local level by providing bags of food for at-risk students in the Athens School system to take home over the weekend.
Through the Diner, the community of Athens /Limestone County is helping to give folks a second chance at life, allowing them the opportunity to gain a skill that will help them to take care of themselves and their families. This is the love of Christ, this is the hands and feet of Jesus at work.

Washington Street Diner was a disappointment. The latte was lukewarm, and the pastries were far from fresh. I left disappointed and won't be returning anytime soon.

Washington Street Diner at 100 East Washington Street, Athens, Alabama 35611 is a coffee lover's paradise. From the moment I stepped inside, the intoxicating aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans enveloped me. It was a sensory delight that set the stage for what turned out to be an exceptional coffee experience. I opted for their house blend, and I was blown away by the depth of flavor. The coffee had a perfect balance of brightness and richness, and it left a lingering, pleasant aftertaste. It was evident that the beans were sourced with care, and the barista's skill in brewing them was undeniable. The ambiance at Washington Street Diner was equally impressive. The café was bathed in soft, natural light, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely morning coffee or a quiet afternoon of work. The minimalist décor and comfortable seating added to the overall charm. What truly stood out, though, was the friendly and attentive staff. The baristas were not only skilled in their craft but also passionate about coffee. They were more than happy to chat about the different brewing methods, offer recommendations, and even share anecdotes about the origins of the coffee beans. Washington Street Diner is more than just a coffee shop; it's an experience. Whether you're a coffee connoisseur or simply in search of a cozy, welcoming spot to enjoy a cup of joe, this place has you covered. It has earned a permanent spot on my list of favorite coffee spots, and I can't wait to return.

My recent visit to Washington Street Diner was fantastic. The espresso had a rich, complex flavor profile that left me craving for more. The vintage decor and vinyl records playing in the background added to the charm.
