More about Cynthia'S Scones

I began baking the scones out of my house roughly 3-1/2 years ago. Kevin and I had just purchased a bakery/cafe 1-1/2 blocks off of the plaza in downtown Sonoma. We had never intended on purchasing a cafe but the commercial kitchen was perfect for Kevin to make his cheesecakes - Studebaker Cheesecake. Once customers began to arrive we realized that cheesecake and coffee just wasn't going to cut it.
I would wake up in the early morning hours - bakers hours - and begin bak...ing muffins, cookies and scones, I would place them in the oven, wake the children up, rush to get out of the house to drop off the baked goods at the cafe while transporting Emerson (now 11) and ReillyAnn (now 7) to school/preschool/farm tots, etc...
Customers really liked the scones! and the rest is history......
My first morning of delivering scones was to one location - 'Terri's Hot Shots' in Sonoma. A small coffee cart - I believe I delivered 6 to her that morning. By the end of the week I was delivering to 3 locations in Sonoma. By the end of the year I had 12 locations in Sonoma & Glen Ellen. Once the Whole Foods Market Sonoma began placing orders I knew It was time to expand.
Over the past couple of years I have gained accounts and lost a few - various reasons - burnt scones, scones with no sugar, late deliveries, no deliveries at all - all with good excuses - vehicle breaks down, oven breaks down, I break down - "I'm not baking any more scones!" The last lost account was because I made an accounting mistake......you win some you lose some.....
I now bake close to 400 scones per night - at the commercial kitchen - with the help of Maurice, my two children - I had to put them to work, and three teenage girls - all in the process of applying to various colleges, dating boys, and enjoying their senior year at high school - it's fun to re-live the high school experience through them! The whole process takes about 4 hours depending on what fruit we are using and how long it takes to chop it up.
I must say this scone journey has taken me to places of exhaustion and joy that i never dreamed possible. There are times when the exhaustion overrides the joy and then I find myself placing scones, early in the morning, on a shelf in a market and a customer will come up to me and tell me that they are the best scones that they have ever had. I get back in my car and keep going.........
Maurice says we are going over the Golden Gate Bridge this winter - he says this will take us over the 'small business hump' - I hope so. I can't even imagine delivering to San Francisco every morning..........look out here we come!!!!!

Kevin races back frantically to get the children to school on time - we have received a letter from the school stating that we have been declared TRUANT - in all capital letters to be exact! not good.......

These scones are full of flavor. Cynthia also knows how to combine the ingredients, not only for flavor but also for their colors and textures, making the scones look beautiful.
Have one of your scones almost Daily. My favourites are the Strawberry And the Pear Almond - the sanding sugar puts it over the top! Love!!!
Delicious! The flavor is fabulous and the fruit always tastes fresh. Having a gluten free scone is just like eating a regular one! Great flavor; great recipe!
