I have the chicken curry sandwich, every bite was a decadent yummy goodness.
So so so.good!!
I was invited here by a friend of mine to check this place out. It's a cool little authentic deli and store selling all kinds of food and non-food gift items from the Great North. The place is quaint and charming. Small tables, and you're kind of seated around the gift shop or the cafe. It's a nice place to relax and have conversation. Their cafe does have some impressive and authentic menu items. It's not for everyone's taste buds, but I'm game for anything that's unfamiliar. The cardamom latte is fantastic. Warm, not overpowering in that herbal flavor, and less sweet than a chai latte. Warms the soul like drinking hot chocolate on a cold winter's day. I got to sample some of the pickled cucumbers, which are vinegary, salty and savory, but bright green in color. Their beet salad is good as well, but it's a lot like a potato salad, since they use mayo in dressing. I ordered the gravlax (aka smoked salmon) sandwich. Really great piece of fish, with dill on top, served with onion, cucumber, a dill dressing, on bread. There's a great contrast in flavors from the smoked fish, bite from the raw onion, slightly salty pickled cucumber and the dressing. Service is friendly and helpful. There's lots of menu items that are new and unfamiliar, so they're great and lovely for answering questions or making recommendations. I definitely need to come back to try their caviar items. Parking in the Mid Cities/Pico is a pain. It's all street parking. Bring your patience.
Friendly service. Affordable. Food is delicious, highly recommend the shrimp skagen. Candy section is a blast!
The shrimp sandwich was so good. I also sampled the amazing curry chicken and the surprisingly good herring salad. Unbelievable I never knew about this gem.
Oh my! Tried the curry chicken sandwich. Very tasty, and affordable menu. The place has also a deli full of products from Sweden. Friendly people.
The Olsons Scandinavian Delicatessen & Cafe is my go to! It's a bit on the spicy side but I like that. Service is pretty quick considering that it is usually crowded. But...the real winner here is the BREAD PUDDING!! OMG!!! So good! You can definitely taste the rum but it's just enough.
If you're looking for a no nonsense, affordable, non-chain and delicious place to eat this is it. This cafe has a ton of both healthy and yummy sandwiches, drinks, and snacks. The Reuben is delicious and a match green tea smoothie doesn't hurt!
I love this place so much. Every time we're in Los Angeles we stop here. It's easy to get to and there is usually parking right out front. You can order counter service and sit and eat in the restaurant or get food to go. We love the herring, beet salad, skanska toast - basically everything. They also have a candy section where you can pick out what you like from bins. The gift shop is darling too - we always buy a Swedish book. It's a truly wonderful place.
Pricey, but the shrimp Skagen sandwich is so well executed that it's worth far more than any similarly (or probably even higher) priced "lobster roll" being hawked in Los Angeles. Wide variety of strange candies too! Have to try some of the locally made hot dogs for home griddling in the future.
Pleasant atmosphere, friendly service, delicious cardamom ice cream :-)
This venue is spacious—a good place for small groups to meet, and a comfortable neighborhood haunt. Recently adopted by new owners who are devoted to its Scandinavian base, Olsons will likely be an even better place to stop for a snack, a meal, or for imported Scandinavian packaged goods.
Great time at 1PM on Saturday.
We go to a different country's restaurant every week-Hungarian, Arabic, Thai, Nepalese, Tibetan, etc. Olson's was so much fun . A Danish standout.
We also bought at the store and had dinner entries and desserts.
Then we walked home to Pico and Crenshaw. Places like Olson's are definitely improving the neighborhood. We talked with Jill about Sweden and Denmark. A great conversation all the way around! Thanks!
We'll be back!
