About Goodson'S Cafe

Serving Tomball and hungry Texans since 1950

Goodson'S Cafe Description

Our First Half Century

Back in 1950, a little lady by the name of Ella Goodson went to work in a small cafe near Tomball. Four years later, the owner of the cafe decided to sell out. He convinced Mrs. Goodson that she was the only person he knew that could "make a go of it" at the cafe.

About the time that "Ma" Goodson bought the cafe, the area began to experience an oil boom. Soon "Ma" Goodson had a bustling business serving meals to oil field workers and to the folks that lived in and around Tomball. It wasn't long before it was recognized by all that "Ma" Goodson had an exceptional talent when it came to the preparation of that Texas favorite, "CHICKEN FRIED STEAK"

Soon Houstonians heard about "Ma" Goodson's and began making the trip to Tomball to eat what had been proclaimed by many to be "The Best Chicken Fried Steak in Texas" "Ma" Goodson and her Famous Chicken Fried Steak have appeared in numerous publications as well as being featured on the popular television program, "The Eyes of Texas"

Goodson's Cafe or "Ma" Goodson's, as it is known to many, has over the years become what is known in the restaurant business as an "institution". Similar to other famous restaurant institutions, each has built a particular incomparable reputation for their specialty, and for Chicken Fried Steak, it is and has been Goodson' Cafe since 1950.

Recently we have been featured on the Travel Channel's "DEEP FRIED PARADISE" Along with being voted number "62" in the Travel Channels "AMERICA'S 101 Tastiest Chowdowns".

I was there back in the late 1970"s and 1980's and they had the best food ever. I have friends that still live near there and say the food is still the best anywhere. I wish somebody would open one of those up here in New Jersey where I now live. I have tried chicken fried steak's at every place I could find and nothing compares to them.

First time eating here, we loved it. I’m usually not about raving on restaurants, but this place lives up to it’s reputation. Food was excellent as well as the service. Can’t wait to go back.

We’ve been several times, food was good. Yesterday they were very busy, our poor waiter was running ragged, but he was always checking on us with a smile, aimed to please! Our only issue was they served our Appetizer same time as our meal and they were out of lemons. That won’t keep us from returning, we like the food and they’re always friendly!

The CFS was yummy but not best ever. More steak per breading ratio would be my preference. The green beans were wonderful and the mashed potatoes awesome homemade flavor. Gravy while plentiful was so-so. Would return if already in the area, but wasn’t worthy of “food bucket list status”.

Small, home town atmosphere inside the restaurant. Wait staff was attentive and accommodating. We went specifically for the chicken fried steak. The price was very reasonable and the food was good. I would go back if it weren’t such a long drive from my house. I recommend this place.

CFS ( small) was very good as was the fried okra and mashed potatoes. Service was very good. It has been several years since we were there and we weren’t disappointed!

We hadn’t been there in a few years as we moved away, I brought my Mom & Cousin in the food tasted great but they both got violently ill , we all had fried Catfish and salad.

They claim to have the Best CFS in TX...NO they don't. We ordered two small steaks, mine was good, my husband's was more breading than meat. A quarter of his serving had NO Steak at all...!!! I had to ask for my cold mashed potatoes to be reheated and the squash was too sweet. I know it's a local favorite, but we were not impressed.

Been eating here 30 years and the owner changes homemade Italian dressing recipe. HUGE mistake. I always get Chef Salad and the pink dressing is why I get that salad! I was served a tasteless watery white dressing the other night because they told me owner changed it. Bad idea. AND my husbands chicken fried steak was mostly crust!! Didn’t appreciate the blue jean hot pants on the girls either. Not the Goodson I’ve known for 30 years...sad.

Yesterday was the 1st time for my son to go to Goodson's for lunch with me. After we were seated I realized we had the same waitress, Megan, as last time my husband and I were at Goodson's. (sigh...) We ordered our drinks and the fried mushrooms appetizer. Before she left the table I said I'd also have sweet tea(same as my son) so it was easier for refills. She said it didn't matter to her and she didn't care. She brought the drinks and mushrooms fairly quickly so I had high hopes that it wouldn't be like last time. She came back to take the lunch order. Our drinks were empty (only ice in the cups)and I had to ask her for more tea and extra napkins as she was walking away. She walked away and about 8 minutes passed, we finished the mushrooms and still had no ice tea refills. She was standing near the bathroom talking with another employee (male, tall, thin, dark hair wearing a ball cap). She turned her head and my son waved his cup at her and she brought a tea pitcher to fill our cups. We still had no extra napkins. Meanwhile, there was an older waitress, about 5', with long hair in a ponytail who was very attentive to her tables, she brought refills without being asked and brought their food way before ours and we'd been there and ordered first. This waitress was actually the one who sat us in the section with 4 booths kind of sectioned off in the middle. She was also working in this small section. Megan brought our entrees. Again we asked for more tea and napkins. She brought both and disappeared to the back near the restrooms again. I got up to use the restroom and saw her sitting with her back to the dining room in the first booth in the back room. The male employee from earlier was sitting across from her facing the dining room, they were talking. I used the restroom then went back to our table. I made a point of looking at them directly to get their attention. My son had finished his lunch, his cup was empty and he needed a box. Megan was walking around near the restrooms. My son again waved his empty cup at her. She brought tea and returned with a box after he asked. The mushrooms were awesome, both entrees, the rolls and gravy were also good. We live in Atascocita, it takes an hour each way to go to Goodson's. My son, 23 yr old, has been a manager of a Chinese restaurant near our home for the last 4 years. We were not impressed in the least with our waitress. Since this experience was almost identical as last time, smh..... there's a breakdown in management somewhere to allow servers to give such poor service. I seriously doubt we'll be back unless we're out there already and my husband insists. IF we do come back, we'll be refusing to have Megan as our server. We WON'T be making the hour trip across town just to go to Goodson's any longer.

I’ve enjoyed the best chicken fried steak fir many years, but yesterday I was extremely disappointed that my chicken fried steak was too tough and chewy. It didn’t even have much flavor like it always had in the past. On the plate it looked really large , but 1/3 of it was just plain breading when I cut it. I chose not to complain because the waitress was so nice. I didn’t want to embarrass her. We don’t think we will be visiting there anymore. So sad and disappointed.

Ate here the first time a couple months ago and it was very good. This time we ordered the same meals and it was not good at all. Potatoes were pasty like they sat in a warming table all day, CF steak was mushy and the gravy was very lumpy and flower tasting. You know it’s bad when a big guy can’t get half the food down before giving up.

Hope we just caught them on a bad day and this isn’t the new norm. It’s worth rolling the dice to catch them on a good day.

We ordered fried mushrooms and fried pickles for appetizer! Our waitress brought our appetizers out with our food we were very upset we wanted our appetizers first most waiters or waitresses know that when you order an appetizer you want it before you get your food this waitress didn’t even ask she just assumed that we wanted it with our food so she took our food back to try to keep it warm so we can have her appetizers first then by the time we got our food The food wasn’t that hot it was kind of cold very unhappy with the service at Goodson’s

This place feels so dirty. Our waitress didn’t care much about being at work or us as customer’s. Didn’t care about refilling our drinks or bringing our food. I was thinking that maybe she is under paid and unmotivated. The manager is disgusting and needs to be at Jack in the Box or Sonic. Maybe he is the reason for the “falling down” of this Tomball landmark. We left and said that was our last trip. It’s a shame as my family and our extended family have spent many family dinners here. Mr. Fogarty should take back the reins and save this place. #1 FIRE the manager who also doesn’t seem to care about work ethic, dressing himself for work or being an example for those who must work under him.

I don't know how my review got posted as favorable. The chicken fried steak was horrible! Dry as a bone, crust falling off. This was my fourth time trying this chicken fried steak, no seasoning, dry and a waste of money. The place also needed a good cleaning. We live 3 miles from this place, and will not be returning.
