PHOEBE’S DINER: A NEW RESTAURANT BY LOCAL AUSTIN RESATUARATEURS TO OPEN IN THE 78704. Local restaurant Winebelly Group is teaming with Chef Camden Stuerzenberger to open Phoebe’s Diner featuring greasy spoon favorites with a touch of smoke at 533 W. Oltorf. Opening summer 2017
Local artisans along with some their own creative charm to design the restaurant. Eric Billig of Rabbet Labs will be crafting the bar which will be the focal centerpiece of the restaurant consisting of a maple bar top with a multi-dimensional bar face. The 1600sqft restaurant will have the classic nuances of a 50’s diner with a modern twist. Simplicity along with some vibrant colors will accentuate the culinary style.
Chef Camden Stuerzenberger has been a part of the Austin culinary family for over the 15 years, most recently of Fork & Vine. During his tenure there, his creativity with smoked foods was further ingnited and his dishes often reflected the smoky inspiration. A few of the other restaurants Camden has been the Chef are Bess Bistro, Walton’s Fancy & Staple, South Congress Café, and the Hyatt Lost Pines. This boldness, combined with the Chef’s passion to use simple, thoughtfully sourced ingredients sets the table for his culinary style. His approach is to always make it fun for staff and patrons alike, “After all that is why we have so much passion for what we do. Cooking is full of emotions, number one is fun! ”
Phoebe’s cuisine will consist of dishes that one would find in a Classic American Diner paired with some Texan Barbecue favorites. “I mean who wouldn’t eat smoked pork ribs and grits with a fried egg?” Their smoker, nicknamed “Flapjack”, will be an integral part of the culinary team. “Flapjack” will assist the team in smoking brisket, ham, ribs, beets, onions…. well, just about anything! If something smoky doesn’t suit you, how ‘bout a stack of buttermilk pancakes or fried chicken with cracked pepper biscuits? Breakfast puffy tacos, migas on a crispy potato sope, fried French toast, and some damn good bacon and eggs are some other dishes to be found on the menu.
The restaurant will seat roughly 90 people with goals to expand to a patio behind the restaurant with a view of the tree lined Gillis Park. Hours of operation will be Monday to Sunday, 7am to 3pm. The bar will be stocked with beer and wine, offering creations such as mimosas with unique seasonal juice blends and craft brew micheladas. Espresso and other morning fuel will be on the menu as well. The dining area will be able accommodate large groups as well for gatherings of any kind.
Phoebe’s inspiration came from Chef Camden’s desire to get back to his roots. Originally from the Dallas-Ft. Worth area, Camden began his culinary journey in bakeries and cafes in his mid-teens. “It was a very family oriented environment for both the guests as well as the restaurant team. No one excluded. ” Now, after years of the fine dining world he has come full circle to usher in the neighborhood diner and share that experience with South Austin. With family on the mind Phoebe’s Diner will be welcomed to the restaurant world in July and Chef Camden and his wife Amelia will be welcoming their first child Phoebe a short month later.

excellent food.. even better service...i had the the biscuits and gravy which was incredible..the biscuits were so flaky and delicious...the gravy mad me drool it was so damn good...i highly recommend this place....

Totally enjoyed our breakfast. There was five of us so we all tried something different and also ordered a fried green tomatoes and a cheeky monkey to share. I personally had the Benedict. The ham was smokey good and the biscuits were too instead of the normal muffin. The only disappointment heard was that the brisket was dry. Still think it’s a five instead of a four.

Loved my first visit to Phoebe's! Had the fried green tomatoes with pimiento cheese, freakin' delicious. For the entree, I had the '04 Platter, also loved it. My wife had the shrimp and grits and a beet flavored mimosa, both of which she also really enjoyed. We will definitely be back!

I was impressed....phoebes diner is the real deal! We love to try new places and really try to find good local spots that put love and care into the food. I had the Tuesday special Chicken & Waffles, Yummy delicious chicken atop a buttery waffle with hot sauce maple syrup. Just to make sure I over indulged I added a side of hashbrowns casserole and a biscuit with the Most Amazing Gravy! Give this place a try and you won't be disappointed.

I was driving around wondering where to eat lunch. I saw a “Diner” sign and decided to give the place a try. I ordered the bacon and eggs & blueberry pancakes. Huge portions! The thick sliced bacon was slap-the-table goood. Sunny and inviting dining room. Pleasant waitstaff. I Will be a repeat customer.

Great, delicious, mouth watering food! I will say, the greedy part of me doesn't want to let anyone know how awesome this place is because I like how my husband and I can always get in and out at the peak of the day without any hassle, but the better part of me must tell people all about it! Great service too! We've gone 3 times now and we feel so lucky they're in our neighborhood!

Excellent neighborhood diner! The menu was filled with so many yummy choices, it was hard to choose. We will definitely be back to try more items. The service was great and we loved the feel of the place.

Definitely our new spot for early breakfasts with little girl. Kid friendly with a straight to business menu and wonderful service. Perfectly cooked eggs, wonderful brisket and amazing sides. I will certainly be back for more.

Amazing beautiful food prepared and served by people who care about their community. Camden is an artist with his food, but presented in a way that's recognizable and familiar. Fried green tomatoes with house made pimento cheese is worth the price of admission alone. The sake bloody Mary is to die for! It's loud....but it's a diner so who cares! Talk to the table next to you and get off your phone! Can't wait to go back!
